DSNY PIPES AND DRUMS
performs at the New York Historical Society on a great night for DSNY
"The Sanitation Department covered itself with Irish glory Tuesday March 27th in front of a packed house at the New York Historical Society's Robert H. Smith Auditorium. The Department's Emerald Society Pipes and Drums electrified the audience with a number of stirring renditions as it marched onto and around the stage. Later, the City Council honored Irish speaker and sanitation worker Ed Shevlin for his decades of service to the city and to Irish culture."
The DSNY pipe and drum band took to the stage with members of the FDNY pipe and drum band, led by drum major Kevin Emsworth and pipe major Roger Leahy. We marched in with the Irish set, featuring "Minstrel Boy, Wearing of the Green and Sean South of Garryowen.". The second selection was "Let Erin Remember/Wrap the Green Flag" followed by "Nation Once Again/God Bless America." The music concluded the performance with a passionate version of "Rakes of Mallow," as the band marched out into the glorious halls of the Historical Society.
It was an honor to play and be present while Ed Shevlin received such a prestigious award. The audience was filled with prominent New York people, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. It was Quinn and her staff who recognized Shevy's accomplishments and wanted his story to inspire others to continue or resume their educations. Congratulations Shevy!! You are living proof that hard work can be recognized.
